Fraud Bulletin
Be EXTREMELY WARY of offers by distant strangers to send you a high value (but counterfeit) cashier's check, and then have you wire the balance to them. Banks will cash these counterfeit checks, but then hold you responsible for the funds when the check fails to clear! If you have been victimized, you can contact the FTC toll-free at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357) or use the complaint form at www.ftc.gov, or call the Canadian PhoneBusters hotline toll-free at 1-888-495-8501.
We advise that all buyers/sellers beware, and to use caution when doing business online.
- Beware of ads that are too good to be true.
- Think twice about wiring money outside the country on the word of someone you don't know.
- Ask for a picture of the item(s) with a daily newspaper. Don't accept a factory picture as proof of ownership!
- Use a reputable escrow service such as Escrow.com.
- Don't send any money/products without verifying the identity of the other party.
- Insist on a phone number and call the other person to verify his/her authenticity.
- Do not send money overseas by Western Union or with a money order. Chances are very great that it is a scam.
- A common scam is the following:
"Thanks for the mail, I'm glad that we could come to an understanding on this transaction. I'm ok with the price and the reason of selling the item So i will instruct my client in USA who owed me some money to make a cashier's cheque out of $5,500 USD to you So you will deduct your payment for the item i know this will be strange to you i will give you addtional $100 for the incovinences ,so the excess funds will be send to my reliable shipping agent company here in UK via Western Union to ensure them to come for the pick up at your Location. My client needs following information to make you receive the cheque easily by courier services. 1. Full Name on Cheque, 2. Mailling Address, 3. Contact home phone # including wireless phone#. Hope to read from soon. Thanks
The cashiers check is a fake, and you will lose the money and the item. BEWARE of similar emails!
